Northern Virginia (HSA 2) is home to the densest concentration of dispensaries in the state, with six Beyond Hello locations operated by Jushi Holdings. Serving a region of over 3 million residents in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, these dispensaries are the most accessible medical cannabis option for a large share of Virginia's population.

The DC Proximity Factor
Northern Virginia's cannabis landscape is uniquely shaped by its proximity to Washington, D.C., which has had legal recreational cannabis since 2015 under Initiative 71. However, D.C.'s market operates through a controversial "gifting" model — there are no licensed recreational dispensaries in the District. D.C. does have a separate medical program.
Key differences for NoVA residents to understand:
- Virginia medical dispensaries sell lab-tested, regulated products but require a practitioner certification. Products are subject to state quality controls and dosing standards (10 mg THC per serving).
- D.C. "gifting" shops sell products that are not regulated, tested, or labeled to any standard. You are technically purchasing a sticker or t-shirt and receiving cannabis as a "gift." These products have no quality guarantees.
- Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime, regardless of legality in either jurisdiction. The Potomac River crossings (Key Bridge, Memorial Bridge, 14th Street Bridge) are federal jurisdiction.
Transporting cannabis between Virginia and D.C. (or Maryland) is a federal offense, even though cannabis is legal in all three jurisdictions. Federal bridges and highways mean federal law applies. Keep your Virginia medical purchases in Virginia.
Products Available
Beyond Hello locations carry a full range of medical cannabis products:

- Edibles — gummies, lozenges, chocolates (10 mg THC per serving)

Purchase Limits and Payment
Medical patients can purchase up to 4 ounces of flower per 30-day period or a 90-day supply of other products. Beyond Hello locations accept cash and debit cards. Credit cards are generally not accepted due to federal banking restrictions. ATMs are available on-site.
Getting Certified in Northern Virginia
Virginia does not have a qualifying conditions list. Any registered practitioner can certify you for medical cannabis if they determine it could benefit your condition. Many NoVA patients use telehealth services for convenient certification appointments lasting 15–30 minutes, typically costing $150–$250.
Find a registered practitioner through the CCA practitioner directory.
Looking Ahead: Retail 2027
Northern Virginia will be a prime market for the 350 retail licenses created by HB 642. Given the region's population density and proximity to D.C., expect significant competition for retail locations. Applications open July 1, 2026. See our HB 642 overview for the full timeline.
